Please come to the next City Council meeting to have a final say about the Wal-Mart Project.

Dear Neighbor:

As you may now, Wal-Mart is seeking to build their second store on Santa Rita Road in Pleasanton. The corporation has also expressed interest in other sites throughout the city, as part of their push to overtake the local marketplace. Evidence of this points to Wal-Mart’s announced plans to build similar stores in Hayward and San Leandro, and it is believed they are looking at additional sites in Dublin and San Ramon.

At risk is not just the one additional Wal-Mart store. The risk is that Wal-Mart can expand into multiple sites throughout the city because there is not a process to analyze any of these applications. Issues such as traffic and public safety cannot be addressed. Traffic on Santa Rita Road is already very busy and it will get worse with a new Wal-Mart.

We have an opportunity to make our voices heard! The Pleasanton City Council can pass a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) that will allow the city to properly assess the impacts of this Walmart store on the surrounding neighborhoods and traffic. The City of Brentwood recently passed a CUP and Pleasanton Council members are now considering putting this on the February 7th city council meeting agenda. But they need to hear the support from the community!!!

“The community needs the opportunity to discuss this," said Matt Sullivan, a Pleasanton council member who has voiced his opposition to having yet another grocery store in town. "Walmart tries to come in under the radar and get approval."   (Contra Costa Times 01/18/12)
